If you’re hosting friends or family this Christmas, your home is about to work harder than it has all year — and so is your boiler. Extra showers, cooking, heating doors opening constantly for guests coming and going… it all adds up.

Here’s how to make sure your boiler stays merry and bright over the festive period.

1. Give Your Heating a Test Run Before the Big Day

Don’t wait until Christmas Eve to turn the heating up fully — run your boiler a couple of hours a day in the lead-up to check for:

  • Strange noises

  • No hot water

  • Boiler pressure rising or falling

  • Cold radiators

If anything feels off, this gives you time to get it fixed before guests arrive.

2. Stagger Shower Times to Avoid Hot Water Stress

A full house = back-to-back hot water demand.

Tips:

  • Leave 20–30 minutes between showers

  • Keep hot taps from running unnecessarily

  • Use the dishwasher instead of washing up under hot taps

This reduces the load and avoids scenario: “Mum, there’s no hot water!”

3. Check Your Boiler Pressure (Most Breakdowns Start Here)

Most boilers perform best at 1–1.5 bar.

Too low? Radiators go cold. Too high? The boiler may lock out.

A quick pressure check now can prevent a Christmas Day collapse.

If you're unsure how to top up pressure safely, we’re happy to guide you. Alternatively, you can find many simple videos online.

4. Insulate the Condensate Pipe — Especially If Frost Is Forecast

The Wirral does get sharp overnight frosts, especially around exposed areas like Moreton or Heswall.

A frozen condensate pipe = instant boiler shutdown.

Simple prep:

  • Add pipe insulation

  • Move any outdoor obstructions

  • Know where the pipe is located in case it needs checking

5. Bleed Radiators to Improve Heat Flow

Cold patches or gurgling? Your radiators are likely holding air.

Bleeding them:

  • Improves heat distribution

  • Reduces strain on the boiler

  • Makes the house warm faster for guests

It’s an easy win.

6. Clear the Area Around Your Boiler

Boilers breathe — blocking air flow or stacking items around the cupboard overheats them.

Before Christmas:

  • Remove storage boxes, coats, decorations

  • Ensure the flue is unobstructed outside

7. Don’t Ignore Warning Lights or Error Codes

Boilers try to warn you before failing.

If you see:

  • Constant blinking lights

  • Repeated restarts

  • Error codes

  • Burning smells

  • Loud banging or whooshing

Call an engineer before your guests arrive — these issues don’t fix themselves.

Bonus Tip: Get Your Boiler Serviced Before the Festivities

A pre-Christmas service:

  • Boosts efficiency

  • Spots failing parts early

  • Can prevent emergency call-outs

  • Keeps Ideal/Baxi/Navien boilers within warranty

If you haven’t had yours done this year, now’s the time.

Hosting over Christmas is stressful enough — your boiler shouldn’t join the chaos. A few simple checks now can help you avoid cold showers, chilly rooms, or an emergency breakdown on the big day.
